Early
drive to the town of Gamboa, near the mid point of the
Panama Canal. In Gamboa we board our specially designed
boat for a cruise across Gatun Lake to the nature monument
of Barro Colorado. Formed when the lake was built as
part of the Panama Canal. We will visit the west side
of Barro Colorado Island, which was a hill before the
lake was formed. Established as the first wild life
reserve in the new world tropics. The island has become
a world famous site for tropical research and continues
today under the management of the Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institute. We will have the opportunity to
observe the wild life from the comfort of the boat and
then hike at Peninsula Gigante where we can observe
more flora and fauna such as Mantled Howler Monkey,
Agouti, Sloth, Keel-billed Toucan, Greater Ani, Yellow-backed
Oriole and more. Rare species of often seen here include
King Vulture, American Crocodile and Peccary. While
at peninsula gigante we will enjoy a picnic lunch before
boarding our boat for the return trip to Gamboa.
